Eleven

It was late by the time she made it back to Newport and arrived on Owen’s doorstep, bag and baggage. Or rather, bag and bag and bag and baggage. There are people in the world who travel light, content to wander from home with a wing and a prayer and a favorite pair of flip-flops. Sophie wasn’t one of them.

As much as she loved to visit new places and meet new people, she was a homebody at heart, into cocooning long before it became trendy. There were things she just liked having around, familiar things that made her feel safe and happy. When her father remarried and her stepmother moved in and gradually put her stamp on the house, Sophie’s room became her sanctuary. She decorated it with castoffs that had been relegated to a box in the garage and that she rescued before Goodwill came to haul them away. Relics of happier days, those favorite things went with her to college and then to her first apartment and to the condo where she lived now. A few small treasures, mostly photos, always found their way into her suitcase when she was away from home, but three bags full were a little much even for her.

It couldn’t be helped. She had a gut feeling that between dealing with Ivy and dealing with the feelings Owen stirred up inside her, she was going to need as many stress busters and creature comforts as she could get. First she’d decided to bring along her own pillow, then her favorite mug and the ginger-peach tea she liked, and it just sort of snowballed from there.

Owen met her at the door.

“You look surprised to see me,” she observed. “We did agree that I would be back tonight?”

“That was the plan,” he confirmed, nodding. “But I wondered if you’d have second thoughts.”

“About moving in? Oh, I’ve had second, third, and fourth. You have to admit, the situation is more than a little unorthodox. And awkward.”

“And yet . . .”

She sighed. “And yet when you come right down to it, I’d rather deal with unorthodox and awkward than have to look Shelby in the eye and tell her the reason she can’t have her Princess House wedding is because I’m a quitter.”

He didn’t comment, but since he’d already made clear his feelings about love and marriage and happy-ever-after, Sophie figured it had to be pure cynicism that she saw glitter in his eyes. Naturally he would think she was wasting her time.

“Here, let me take that for you,” he said, reaching for the handle of the suitcase resting on its wheels beside her.

“I’ve got this one, but there’s more in the car if you want to help.”

She wheeled the suitcase into the hall and then followed him back outside. By the time she reached the car, he had one bag on his shoulder and one under his arm.

“How about handing me that duffel bag?” she said.

“I’m all set.”

“Yeah, but I don’t want you to hurt yourself.”

He stopped and glanced at her over his shoulder.
